Adventures in Unmet Expectations
“When he arrived there, a man noticed him wandering around the countryside. ‘What are you looking for?’ he asked.” Genesis 37:15 NCV
For some traveling is an adventure in and of itself. No matter the destination, they find pleasure in just going. I am not one of these; ask Joni! My goal is to arrive at the destination as quickly as possible, no matter how many things of interest we may pass by in my rush to arrive.
I can imagine myself as Joseph looking for my brothers, and getting angrier with each moment as I realize my brothers are not where they were supposed to be. Once again these brothers, these irresponsible slackers, are going out of their way to make my life miserable!
Now, do you really see anything that would logically lead to my conclusion? No, because my conclusion was based on my feelings, emotions, and frustrations, those unmet expectations. You know what I am referring to, those little things we just know will be exactly as we want. And when they aren’t as expected, look out world! I am quite likely to let you know just how horribly I have been treated! Once again, the almighty ME gets in the way, stunting my growth and threatening the growth of those around me
Over the years my attitude to traveling has been changing; I’m more willing to enjoy the journey. I have discovered this change also affects how I experience my spiritual, emotional, mental, and even my physical growth. However, this is especially so in the process of Grace. I am learning the end result of Grace is absolutely guaranteed. Jesus secured it for us a long time ago, the incredible gift that Jesus gives to any who will receive it. We can find joy, peace, wonder, challenge, and so much more as we progress in God’s grace.
