Now begins the most difficult task in this three-act proposition. It continues to show humanity’s susceptibility to the lies of counterfeit spirituality as it battles against God’s Passionate Spirituality—God’s Spiritual Passion of Grace.
“As it is written, I have made you the father of many nations. [He was appointed our father] in the sight of God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and speaks of the nonexistent things [that He has foretold and promised] as if they [already] existed.” Romans 4:17 Amplified Bible
The final act is the most difficult because it deals with my own continuing journey as I move through the process of God’s grace-filled transformation. As challenging as change is, it is an inherent part of God’s passionate grace in our life process. It is a process that takes a lifetime of learning how God works in us and for us.
This, then, is Act Three, a story concerning one who desires to remain a pilgrim in the journey that I have come to know as the process. It is never easy opening up one’s own personal “War of the Worlds”! And it is a war constantly being waged within our hearts, minds, souls, and very being. A war, if we choose to believe and accept, that has been won on our behalf by Jesus.
Where do I begin the telling of my own past, present, and looking to future experiences with the grace that makes passionate spirituality the reality of my life? You will never know how contrary it seemed to me to write that last statement, “…passionate spirituality the reality of my life…”. I am extremely blind when it comes to recognizing this passion is the truth of who I am and desire to be and become. I have come to believe the reason for this is because the allure or the seduction of counterfeit passionate spirituality pierces me where I am most vulnerable.
It is no secret. I believe we all suffer from the god complex, or as it has been termed sin. Because of this issue, our human nature is driven to demand control of every aspect of life, especially those which are absolutely beyond our control. An example of our determination to control is trying to manage the actions or morality of others while offering excuses for our own lapses in areas that often are more egregious to God.
Consider Proverbs 6:16-19: “These six things the Lord hates, indeed, seven are an abomination to Him: a proud look [the spirit that makes one overestimate and underestimate others], a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that manufactures wicked thoughts and plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies [even under oath], and he who sows discord among his brethren.” (Amplified Bible)
Most of these things God calls an abomination are hidden in the depths of one’s heart and mind, easily hidden from all but God. I am able to still pass myself off as something I am not and this is something God cannot abide. It is the very heart of the counterfeit, this passing itself off as a superior passionate spirituality. It destroys. This is in direct opposition to the spiritual passion of grace that builds up on all occasions. And the battle is fierce as the enemy seduces me with lies that God couldn’t and doesn’t mean what He says. The enemy works to convince me that God requires more from me than is possible for me to accomplish. So I become entangled in the counterfeit, the Babylon (meaning confusion), leading me to accept the counterfeit that is destroying me.
It is critical that I believe God when He declares He sees me in ways I am unable to see myself! I must accept His word that He declares in me life that is eternal no matter what I think or see or feel! The Holy Spirit wrestles me from the Babylon of the counterfeit and leads me into the transformation found only in the passionate spirituality of God—He who quickens the dead!
The dead is me, all over and in so many ways. Which is why His Grace means so much to me! I know that if God did not rescue me from myself every moment of every day I would never survive! He reminds me that Jesus took what I deserve and gives me what He deserves every nano-second of every moment of every day making His spiritual passion of grace real in my life.
Several years ago I came to understand what I know is an amazing principle of God’s Grace. It is His damage control. There is nothing I can mess up so much that He isn’t able to make something incredible out of my sin, my god complex. He does this even as He is transforming me from living the counterfeit passionate spirituality that causes so much damage! He is making me what I am not according to the plans He has for me, so I become what He longs for me to be.
To sum up, I would say I am in the process, the process of God’s Grace. Just like the woman caught in adultery, and Saul, the persecutor of believers, God is changing Ron, the one who would be king. We all share this one thing in common. God is passionately, intimately accomplishing this reality in our lives, His own spiritual passion of grace.
You will recognize God’s spiritual passion of grace when you see it, because His passionate spirituality always builds up. (See Matthew 25:31-46)
“As it is written, I have made you a father of many peoples, in the presence of the God in whom you have believed, who quickens the dead, and who invited those who are not yet in being as though they were present.” Romans 4:17 Ancient Eastern Text
