“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free…Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.” John 8:32,36 Christian Standard Bible
This weekend we celebrate the gift of freedom we share as a nation, but it also reminds us freedom isn’t free. Its cost is substantial, often harder to measure than we know until the price has been paid.
Tomorrow, as a nation, we remember that our forefathers had to fight against tyranny in order to retain their freedom. Their lives were being controlled by legislation without representation, laws made without their ability to have any input. As the controls became more invasive, it became clear to the colonists the only answer was to declare independence from the tyranny that was destroying their way of life.
Tyranny had long before come into the lives of people. The tyrant was an enemy who was determined to destroy in any manner possible. In answer to that tyranny, God sent His Son to end the rebellion by offering Himself in place of the rebels. Yes, we are those He came to save and set free. As He put it, Jesus came to give us a freedom that would make us free indeed! Are you free indeed? If not, why not? What is it that keeps the disciples of Jesus from being free, especially as He promised to make us free beyond anything we could ever hope to imagine!
Is it because we don’t know the One who promises to give us all we most need? Jesus gives us the answers we need! He is the truth that sets us free from all that would destroy us. The battles may continue, but the outcome of the war has already been determined by Jesus Christ. 2000 years ago Jesus went to His death so those He loved could be free. Jesus died to protect and safeguard the freedom His truth provides to the children of God, the members of His Kingdom!
Over 200 years ago our ancestors went to their deaths so those they loved could be free. The question remains, what will we do with this freedom so many have died to provide for those coming after to live as free men and women? Maybe even more to the point, do you know you are free? Whether as a citizen of this country or as a citizen in the Kingdom of God, we are free! Because even with all the problems and all that is wrong with the way our nation is governed these days, it still offers freedoms many others only dream about, the freedoms men and women died to provide and protect.
How will you celebrate this freedom so many have given their all to make sure you and I would have? Hopefully by remembering how much it cost, and that it was worth it to those who paid the price.
“Be full of love for others, following the example of Christ who loved you and gave himself to God as a sacrifice to take away your sins. And God was pleased, for Christ’s love for you was like sweet perfume to him.” Ephesians 5:2 The Living Bible
