“Pilate said to Him, ‘What is truth?’ ” John 18:38 New American Standard Bible
From the moment the serpent enticed Eve with delusions of becoming like God, knowing the difference between good and evil, our ability to discern truth has been nearly impossible. Eye witnesses to accidents, crimes, and altercations invariably offer extremely differing stories as to what they saw with their own eyes. Each one absolutely sure about what they saw, what happened, who did what to whom-when-where-and-why!
Actually, it is very interesting to note that if witness stories sound too much alike, authorities are likely to believe the eyewitness accounts have been manufactured, are likely fabrications. So, in addition to the question, What is Truth, there is also the question, Where will we find Truth?
When I read the words Pilate asks Jesus concerning truth, I can hear the steel of irony in Pilate’s voice. Pilate has just received the confirmation from Jesus that He is indeed a King, that He is fulfilling His earthly destiny, testifying to the truth, and clarifying that those who know the truth hear His voice. And as Pilate looks on this king, his scorn is evident especially as the people howl for the death of this so called King of the Jews.
It is so easy to miss truth in this world-that-was-bought-for-a-lie. Relationships were built on lies, actions justified by lies, and legacies reveal the damage caused by half-truths which are lies.
If there is one thing we can learn from the story of Joseph and his brothers, it is that lies and half-truths destroy. We can also learn there is nothing we can so destroy that the Truth of God can’t restore. God is more than able to restore! We may feel (and fear) restoration is impossible, yet don’t we believe there is nothing impossible for God?
There is no half way with truth; there are no “white lies.” We commit to the Truth that is Jesus Christ, and it is His responsibility to lead us into All Truth. Remember His promise to send to us a Comforter, to keep us from the lies, to return us to Truth when we get lost, when we take a wrong turn, when we become confused and need clarification of Truth. We are never left alone to try to decipher What is Truth because we know Who is Truth!
“Send one of you that he may get your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.” Genesis 42:16 New American Standard Bible
As Joseph faced his brothers for the first time in 13 years, he obviously wondered whether they were the same men that threw him in a pit and sold him into slavery. Had they changed? Was it a change for the better, or was it possible could they be even more cruel and greedy now? Joseph needed to know what kind of men his brothers had become. The answer to that question was to decide Joseph’s actions towards his brothers, at least at that moment in time. Remember, Joseph was a man with the same feelings and emotions we have.
Consider what might be your first response at seeing those who had meant to harm you, even to murdering you. What if they had only spared your life in order to profit by selling you into slavery? Saying Joseph experienced anger at the sight of these men could be rather a mild description.
It is one thing to feel emotion, and another to allow emotion to rule over us. Joseph was ruled by God, just as we are ruled by God if we so choose. The Grace relationship Joseph had with God, the same one we either have or can have, was a relationship of change. Our lives in God’s Grace relationship are also about the process of change, the process of Truth replacing the lies which have filled our lives for far too long.
“Pilate replied, ‘But you are a king then?’ ”
“ ‘Yes,’ Jesus said. ‘I was born for that purpose. And I came to bring truth to the world. All who love the truth are my followers.’ ” John 18:37 The Living Bible
When Jesus makes the statement, He IS the Truth. Truth sets us free to become all we were originally meant become, children of God filled with Truth, set free in Love. It cannot be perfectly reflected here on this broken planet, however it is being processed through Grace in “Everyone who is of the truth and hears My [Jesus] voice.” John 18:37c New American Standard Bible
We have no idea what will be next in our lives, but we do know who has our lives. We don’t know if our words will bring truth, but we know who brings Truth to our words.
Face it, we all have filters that see what we want to see way too often. I’m not talking about a fault, it’s just a fact. We need to remember, to understand that we live in a world that has been ravaged by the rebellion for millennia. Our lives, behavior, attitudes, and thought processes are products of the damage done because of the rebellion. That is why God covers us with His Damage Control! He gifts us with Salvation, Grace, the Fruit of the Spirit, and The Comforter who prays for us, because we don’t know what or how to pray. He guides us, carrying us, delivering from the enemy, and so much more!
And the God who is Truth tell us it is all ours through Jesus Christ who chose what was ours and gave to us what was His! What is truth? That Is Truth, Truth for Eternity!
